Please remember that there is a quiz on poetic devices tomorrow. Please see the definitions below. Remember that you will have to know each device by name and know their definitions or what an example might be.
Alliteration: The repetition of similar initial letter sounds.
Assonance: The repetition of similar stressed vowel sounds.
Metaphor: A comparison between two essentially unlike elements (without using like, as, or than).
Hyperbole: A deliberate exaggeration.
Onomatopoeia: Using words that sound like what they are trying to represent.
Oxymoron: A combination of two contradictory or conflicting words.
Personification: When human characteristics are attributed to animals or inanimate objects or ideas.
Rhyme Scheme: The assignment of letters to lines of poetry.
Simile: A direct comparison using "like", "as", or "than".
